Dental anxiety is one of the most common reasons people put off treatment. If a root canal feels daunting, I want to reassure you: care is calm, unhurried, and built around keeping you comfortable - with intravenous sedation available for patients who need it.
A lot of the patients I see feel anxious about treatment, often because of a difficult experience in the past. That's something I take seriously. Dental anxiety is real, and it's nothing to be embarrassed about.
Treatment is carried out gently, under local anaesthetic, using a dental operating microscope to enhance visualisation of your tooth. I'll always take the time to explain what's happening and go at a pace that's comfortable for you. Many nervous patients are genuinely surprised by how manageable the experience is once they're in the chair.
If anxiety has been putting you off getting a tooth treated, please don't let it - there are always options, and we'll find the approach that's right for you.
Many people find dental treatment challenging because of their anxiety or a strong gag reflex. For patients whose anxiety makes treatment feel overwhelming, intravenous (IV) sedation is available. It leaves you conscious and able to respond, but deeply relaxed - most patients remember very little of the procedure afterwards.
Sedation is provided by Dr Damien Reilly, a Consultant in Special Care Dentistry with extensive experience in both delivering and teaching intravenous dental sedation. He travels to whichever of the seven practices is most convenient for your treatment, working alongside me to keep your care as comfortable and stress-free as possible.
Whether you're a nervous patient yourself or a dentist referring one, treatment with intravenous (IV) sedation can be arranged at any of the seven practices where I work - from central London out to Hertfordshire:
